Nothing feels more calming than a clean and organized home. To help get your new year off on the right foot, consider a New Year’s organization spree. You’ll go through the piles of clutter that have accumulated over the last year and sort through what’s necessary and what’s only making a mess to help make your home comfortable and fresh for 2026.

To help your new year organization cleaning spree, here are 7 tips that will help you organize and keep your home organized for the new year.

1. Declutter for the New Year

Start by going through your cluttered spaces or anywhere where you’ve been hiding that stuff you aren’t sure what to do with. Sort through your clutter and consider these guiding decluttering principles:

  • Only keep what makes you happy. Marie Kondo has famously remarked that your home should only have what sparks joy, and that can be a helpful guiding principle. If you have clutter that’s adding more stress to your life or that you haven’t touched in a year, it might be time to let it go.
  • Keep what you have storage for. Your possessions won’t feel like clutter if you have the right storage for it. If you have space and a designated storage spot for certain items, keep them. If they’re being left on the counter or stuffed into a closet because there’s nowhere where the item belongs, it may be time to let that one go.

Strategically going through your clutter and sorting everything into “keep and organize” and “donate” piles is a great place to start. Once you know what you’re keeping, you can start organizing.

2. Donate Clutter Quickly

After evaluating your clutter, it’s time to find a new home for it. One of the best ways to clear out clutter is to donate what you no longer need or can store comfortably. Donate your clutter as quickly as you can, so it doesn’t continue to clutter up your home or car. You don’t have to donate it to anyone you know and can take it to a local secondhand store or donation center to help clear out your home that day.

3. Make Organization Simple

One of the key ways to organize at the start of the year and keep your home organized all year is to make your organization system simple. Here are a few ways you can make organization easy:

  • Take lids off of hampers. Don’t make it difficult to toss something in the hamper. Instead, take the lids off, so you can easily throw your clothes in. That will help you avoid the endless cycle of stacking things on top of the hamper or on the floor around it.
  • Take off closet doors. Turn your closet into a storage space that’s easy to access by taking off the doors. Add some storage bins inside that give every item a designated home, and you’ll find everyone in your household finds it easy to put something away without a door in the way.
  • Add hooks behind doors and in closets. Make hanging up coats easy by adding hooks on the back of doors throughout your home. That way instead of tossing your jacket on the back of a chair, it’s easy to hang up on the back of the door.
  • Don’t fold underwear and socks. Sometimes your socks and underwear build up as clutter because it becomes daunting to fold them all. Make tucking those away easy by storing them in baskets or bins unfolded. That helps you clean up quickly and doesn’t affect your clothes.
  • Hide mess in baskets. Baskets are incredibly easy to tuck away clutter since they have no tops and a wide, open top. Choose cute and matching baskets, and what was once a cluttered closet becomes a beautiful space.
  • Don’t stack. If you’re stacking boxes, know that it will be difficult to get items out of the boxes. And then when it’s time to put something back in the boxes, that will feel difficult and often lead to leaving items out. Instead of stacking, add shelves. The shelves will make it easy for you to grab a bin or basket from any level of the closet.

4. Add Storage Options

If you don’t have storage options that are beautiful and easy to use, it’s time to add them. Think cute baskets, clear jars, coordinated bins, and matching hangers. Label your baskets, bins, and jars, so you know what’s supposed to be in each one. That will make it easier for you to find the item you’re looking for and put it away when you’re done.

5. Be Consistent

A golden rule for organizing your home in a way that will last is to be consistent. That means being consistent with when you tidy, where you put things, and how you do things. Fold your clothes the same way every time to make it a habit. Use the same containers for the same items every time, so putting things away in their designated places becomes second nature. Give everything, even the items in your fridge a designated home that you use every time. Have a consistent tidying routine where you regularly clean up and put everything where it belongs.

Being consistent will help your new year’s organization system last for years to come.

6. Set Up a System

Having an organized home really just means you have systems that work. To help you create organization systems that work, here are a few ideas:

  • Use shelf dividers. When stacking items like sweaters, jeans, or towels on open shelves, shelf dividers keep each stack standing neatly in its designated spot. They create defined columns that look organized and make it easier to use vertical space efficiently.
  • Add drawer dividers. Instead of throwing things into a drawer, add dividers that allow you to make little nooks for different items. For example, you could add a divider to separate your socks from your tights.
  • Label baskets and bins. Adding beautiful labels lets you easily scan shelves and closets for what you need and put things back where they belong.

7. Tidy Up Regularly

Once you’ve created a great organization system, maintain it by tidying regularly. Choose a designated day or time to put anything out of place back where it belongs. Just ten minutes a day can keep your home looking pristine all year long without the need for a major reorganization. I like to spend ten minutes each night after the family goes to bed.  it’s a peaceful way to reset the house for the next day.

New Year Organization FAQs

What is the 10-10-10 rule for decluttering?

The 10-10-10 rule is a simple decision-making method to make decluttering manageable and less emotional. You choose 10 items to throw away, 10 to donate, and 10 to return to their proper place. It helps build momentum by breaking large organizing tasks into quick, achievable steps, perfect for starting the new year with a sense of progress.

What are the 4 C’s of decluttering?

The 4 C’s are clear out, categorize, cut out, and contain. Instead of pulling everything out at once, which can easily lead to overwhelm, focus on one category at a time. For example, start by clearing out just your pants from the closet. Categorize what you have, decide which ones to keep, and cut out the rest by donating or storing items that no longer fit your lifestyle. Then, contain the pieces you’re keeping using the right bins, baskets, or dividers. Once that category is done, move on to another day and tackle short-sleeve shirts, sweaters, or whatever’s next. This step-by-step approach keeps the process manageable and ensures you finish what you start..
