Spring cleaning sounds wholesome until you’re standing in the middle of your home with a half-full trash bag, three “maybe” piles, and absolutely no idea what you were doing 10 minutes ago.

That’s why a spring cleaning checklist is the secret weapon. It gives you a clear path (so you don’t bounce from the bathroom to the pantry to the linen closet and back again), and it helps you finish with a home that feels lighter, calmer, and easier to keep clean. Let’s get started refreshing your home as the weather gets warmer.

Before You Start: Supplies + a 15-Minute Prep

You don’t need a cart full of specialty products. You just need the basics that help you dust, scrub, wipe, and reset.

Grab these essentials:

  • Microfiber cloths (a few—one gets wet, one gets gross, it’s a whole thing)
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Glass cleaner (or a vinegar + water mix)
  • Baking soda (great for deodorizing and gentle scrubbing)
  • Scrub brush + an old toothbrush (for grout, corners, and tiny crevices)
  • Vacuum with attachments (crevice tool = MVP)
  • Mop + floor cleaner
  • Trash bags
  • A donation box or bag
  • Labels or masking tape + a marker (optional but helpful)
  • Rubber gloves (optional but also… why suffer?)

Before you start scrubbing anything, set yourself up for momentum:

  • Put on your favorite music to make the cleaning feel more fun
  • Open windows (fresh air makes everything feel less like a chore).
  • Start one load of laundry (bedding, towels, or bath mats).
  • Put out two containers: one for donating, one for trash.
  • Set a timer for 20–30 minutes per task block.
  • Clean top-to-bottom, left-to-right. You’ll avoid re-dusting and re-wiping.

If you do nothing else: don’t skip the donate/trash bins. They keep you from cleaning around clutter you don’t even want.

Choose Your Timeline (So This Doesn’t Take Over Your Life)

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a “lose the entire weekend” situation. Pick the pace that fits your energy and schedule.

Option 1: Weekend power clean (4–6 hours total)

Best if you want quick wins and a noticeable home reset.

Focus on:

  • Whole-home basics (dust, floors, touch points)
  • Kitchen + bathrooms
  • One bonus project (windows, closet purge, or linen closet reset)

Option 2: 7-day reset (one zone per day)

Best if weekends are busy or you get overwhelmed by big projects.

Example flow:

  • Day 1: Whole-home basics
  • Day 2: Kitchen
  • Day 3: Bathrooms
  • Day 4: Bedrooms
  • Day 5: Living room/common spaces
  • Day 6: Entryway + laundry area
  • Day 7: “Forgotten tasks” day

Option 3: 30-day bite-size plan

Best if your schedule is packed and you’re all about low-stress progress.

Do 10–20 minutes a day: one drawer, one shelf, one task. The checklist stays the same: you’re just spreading it out.

Whole-Home Spring Cleaning Checklist

If you only have time for one list, make it this one. These tasks create the biggest “my house feels clean” shift without requiring you to deep-clean every single drawer.

Whole-home checklist:

  • Dust ceiling corners, vents, and cobwebs
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Wipe walls/spot-clean scuffs and fingerprints
  • Clean windows and mirrors (at least the main ones)
  • Wipe baseboards and door frames
  • Disinfect high-touch spots: doorknobs, handles, light switches, remotes
  • Vacuum edges and corners (and under furniture if you can)
  • Mop hard floors
  • Wash soft goods: throw blankets, pillow covers, entry rugs, bath mats
  • Clean out and disinfect trash cans/recycling bins
  • Replace or clean filters (HVAC return, air purifier, etc.)
  • Declutter “hot spots” (entry pile, kitchen counter, bathroom counter)

Pro move: Put a donation bag in the hallway and toss in 5–10 items as you go. Spring cleaning is a lot easier when you’re not cleaning around stuff you don’t need.

Room-by-Room Spring Cleaning Checklist

This is where the magic happens. Use the sections below as your guide, and don’t feel like you have to do every single task in one day. A checklist is a map, not a test.

Kitchen checklist

The kitchen gets messy fast, so spring cleaning here pays off immediately.

Do this:

  • Clear and wipe counters (and relocate anything that doesn’t belong)
  • Clean the fridge: toss expired items, wipe shelves and drawers, sanitize handles
  • Deep-clean the microwave (steam with a bowl of water + lemon, then wipe)
  • Degrease the stovetop and wipe knobs, backsplash, and range hood area
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and hardware (especially near the stove)
  • Run the dishwasher on a cleaning cycle (and wipe the door edges)
  • Clean the sink and faucet (baking soda + scrub brush does wonders)
  • Sweep/vacuum corners and mop the floor
  • Declutter one “junk” drawer and assign categories (batteries, tape, tools, etc.)

Quick organization win: Create a small “backstock bin” for extra paper towels, trash bags, and cleaning supplies. One container = less chaos.

Bathroom checklist

Bathrooms are small, which makes them a perfect “high impact” room. You can finish one bathroom in under an hour and feel like a superhero.

Do this:

  • Scrub the shower/tub (pay attention to grout lines and corners)
  • Clean and disinfect toilet, sink, and counters
  • Polish mirrors and wipe fixtures
  • Disinfect high-touch points: handles, flush lever, light switches
  • Wash bath mats and towels
  • Replace or wash shower curtain liner (if needed)
  • Declutter under-sink storage and the medicine cabinet (toss expired items)
  • Mop the floor (don’t forget behind the toilet)

Quick organization win: Use a small bin under the sink for “daily use” (toilet cleaner, wipes, extra hand soap). Everything else goes into a separate backstock bin.

Bedrooms checklist

Bedrooms feel instantly calmer when the surfaces are clear and the bedding is fresh. You don’t have to overhaul your entire closet to get that reset.

Do this:

  • Wash all bedding (including duvet cover/comforter if possible)
  • Vacuum mattress and rotate it if needed
  • Dust nightstands, dressers, and baseboards
  • Clear off “flat surfaces” (that chair that becomes a laundry magnet counts)
  • Vacuum under the bed and along edges

Quick closet edit:

  • Pull out anything that doesn’t fit, is uncomfortable, or you haven’t worn in a year
  • Make a donation bag and move on
  • Spot-clean mirrors and windows

Quick organization win: Keep a small basket in the closet for “maybe” items. If you don’t reach for them in 30 days, donate them without rethinking it.

Living room + common areas checklist

Cozy living room with sofas, patterned ottoman, built-in shelves, and large windows

This is the “visible” space, so even small changes make your home feel cleaner.

Do this:

  • Dust surfaces, shelves, baseboards, and décor
  • Wipe down coffee tables and side tables (including the undersides)
  • Vacuum couches and chairs (under cushions too)
  • Disinfect remotes, controllers, and frequently touched items
  • Wash throw blankets and pillow covers
  • Clean windows and glass surfaces
  • Vacuum rugs and edges; mop hard floors

Quick organization win: Create one “reset basket” for the room. If you don’t have time to fully put everything away daily, gather strays into the basket and reset it once a day in 5 minutes.

Entryway + laundry area checklist

These areas quietly control how organized your home feels. If they’re chaotic, everything else feels harder.

Entryway:

  • Wipe the front door (inside/out) and clean handles
  • Shake out or wash entry mats
  • Reset your “drop zone” (keys, bags, shoes, mail)
  • Clear out the coat and shoe area—donate what you don’t use

Laundry area:

  • Wipe the washer gasket and detergent area
  • Clean the lint trap and vacuum around it
  • Organize supplies (bins for pods, stain remover, dryer sheets)
  • Wipe shelves, machines, and utility sink (if you have one)

Quick organization win: Keep a small bowl/tray for keys and a bin for outgoing items (returns, donations, library books). It reduces “where is it?” stress instantly.

Often-Forgotten Spring Cleaning Tasks That Make Your Home Feel Truly Clean

If you’ve ever cleaned a whole room and thought, “Why does it still feel… dusty?” it’s usually because of these.

Add these to your spring cleaning checklist if you can:

  • Window tracks and screens
  • Blinds (a microfiber cloth or sock works great)
  • Air vents and returns
  • Baseboards behind furniture
  • Door frames and the tops of doors
  • Light switches and outlet plates
  • Cabinet pulls, fridge handle, and stove knobs
  • Trash cans and recycling bins (inside and outside)
  • Under appliances (even just along the edges helps)
  • Laundry machine edges and the floor underneath

You don’t need perfection here. Pick 3–5 forgotten tasks and call it a win.
